Curriculum Review Cycle

  • The Curriculum Review Cycle in Northbrook 28 is a systematic process utilized to monitor, evaluate, revise, and implement revisions to the curriculum. It is a model and process to examine student learning and implement changes necessary to continue to advance the district’s mission to “Empower Every Learner.” 

    It is important that teachers are provided with the support, training, instructional resources and a positive educational climate to meet the needs of all learners. This is the purpose of implementing a systematic Curriculum Review Cycle process to evaluate, develop, and implement all curricula in a manner that allocates district resources wisely and effectively.  

    The curricular areas are planned out in staggered multi-year cycles. Each area receives specific focus as it proceeds through the stages of the review cycle. The model facilitates effective and fiscally responsible use of district resources. Budget allocations for supplies and materials, and staff development are focused on the successful implementation of revision. In addition, district and building goals are aligned. This phased approach to curriculum review facilitates teachers’ focus in implementing new programs by allowing them to concentrate on one major content area at a time rather than attempting to manage multiple initiatives.

    The curriculum review cycle process is comprised of three stages:

    • Stage 1: Committee work 
    • Stage 2: Implementation of curriculum revisions 
    • Stage 3: Monitoring, evaluating, and adjusting 

    Typically, the committee work spans two years, followed by the initial year of implementation of revisions. The monitoring, evaluating, and adjusting period takes place over four years to provide the time necessary to successfully implement revisions, monitor impact, and align to the vision for student learning.
